YOUNGS MOUNTAIN TRAIL

The Youngs Mountain trail is one of the newest trails in the Hickory Nut Gorge area near Lake Lure, NC. Recently completed by Conserving Carolina, this short but steep hike leads to beautiful panoramic mountain views.

It’s important to note that you must obtain a free parking permit from the Conserving Carolina website to get to get access to the trailhead. Once you have arrived, you’ll want to sign in at the trailhead kiosk before beginning your hike. This trail is only 2.1 miles each way, however it is fairly steep in some sections, climbing numerous stone and wooden steps as you make your way uphill. The trail is very well built and maintained and a few switchbacks will make the sections towards the top a little easier.

Numerous sweeping views of Lake Lure, Weed Patch Mountain and Rumbling Bald can be had as you continue towards the top. The trail traverses along several cliff faces and high drop offs, so make sure to take caution especially with pets and children. The trail end will be signed, and it is important not to travel off of the marked trail or past the end of the trail, especially at the summit.

You’ll head back down the same way you came, crossing a few small streams and boulder fields to reach the parking area and complete the hike. This trail was made possible by the hard work and dedication of Conserving Carolinas and private land owners. Consider supporting them by becoming a member.

The Youngs Mountain trailhead is located within a gated community in Lake Lure, NC. YOU MUST RESERVE A FREE PARKING/ENTRY PASS online and reservations may be needed well in advance. Please visit Youngs Mountain Trail Access & Parking Permit Tickets to reserve free tickets and get detailed directions.
