Enjoy long range 360 degree views from the top of the Rich Mountain Tower. You can choose to hike the scenic Appalachian Trail to reach the summit or take a winding drive up a gravel forest service road.
To start the hike, you’ll drive deep in to the heart of Madison County to reach the Appalachian Trail crossing at Tanyard Gap along Hwy 25-70. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see a concrete bridge across the road just after the pull off. This is where the AT crosses the Highway. Start the hike from the trailhead in the back of the parking area that immediately climbs the stairs.
Follow the white blazes along the AT as you climb 2.3 miles along a moderate incline with a few switchbacks towards the middle part of the hike. You’ll reach the intersection for the Rich Mountain Access Trail on your left, and leave the AT to continue following the trail to the summit. You’ll emerge at the top and cross the road with the tower located directly in front of you. Walk up the stairs and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Return the same way you came, following the spur trail back to the AT and towards the parking area. At 5 miles, this is a fairly short and moderate hike. I saw lots of birds, turkeys and wildflowers along the way. If you want an easier trip to the summit, follow the road away from the parking area until it ends, and take the gravel road up the mountain. There is a signed intersection closer to the top, where you will go left to reach the tower.
