Douglas Falls is an easy 1 mile round trip hike to a fairly impressive waterfall. Located in Barndardsville NC, there are numerous other roadside cascades on the drive to the trailhead.
You’ll drive to the end of Big Ivy Road/FS74 which is a well maintained gravel forest service road. Along the road to reach the trail, you will pass numerous roadside waterfalls worth pulling over to check out. This road does close in the late fall and winter so check for closures before you go. At the end of the road, the trailhead begins for a half mile easy hike to reach Douglas Falls. Mostly flat and downhill, some sections of the trail stay pretty muddy, so use caution.
The falls are approximately 60′ tall and drop in to a rocky basin that continues down the mountain. You can opt to continue the hike up the rugged Douglas Falls Trail to reach the Mountain to Sea Trail near Craggy Pinnacle and return via the same trail. It is a long climb but well worth it.
